The 8 Limbs of Yoga: 3. Asana: More Than Just a Pose

We often think of Asana—the physical postures—as the whole of yoga, but in the Sutras, asana is defined simply as a posture that is steady and easeful. In other words, the physical practice is meant to prepare us to sit comfortably with ourselves and with life.

The poses help us build strength, flexibility, and balance, yes—but more importantly, they teach us how to stay present in our bodies without forcing or collapsing. Asana is a practice in being with what is, cultivating resilience without rigidity. It’s the meeting place of body, breath, and awareness.
